HOW TO DANCE REGGAETON

Move in time with the passion of reggaeton.

Reggaeton is a musical genre born in the Caribbean and grown in Puerto Rico, Panama and other Latin American countries. With its overwhelming rhythmic bases and sensual style, it has become a much-loved dance in discos and dance classes around the world. But… how do you dance reggaeton?

1. Follow the rhythm of the "dembow"

The heart of reggaeton is the dembow rhythm, a repetitive and very recognizable beat that makes you want to move right away. It is important to feel the music in your body, let yourself go and find your own groove. The most typical movement? That of the hips!

2. Movement of the pelvis and hips

Reggaeton is based on strong and marked movements of the pelvis, often accompanied by a slight bending of the knees. The hips are always protagonists: they move forward and backward, laterally or in rotation, depending on the step.

3. Relaxed but active body

The body must be loose, but controlled:

  • Shoulders and chest move independently from the pelvis (isolations)

  • Free arms, but involved in the general energy of the movement

  • Legs slightly bent to maintain flexibility and responsiveness

4. Learn the basic steps

Some of the most common steps in reggaeton include:

  • Basic step: a simple step with lateral movements and rotation of the hips

  • Perreo: typical movement, sensual and very close to the ground, often danced in pairs

  • Isolation: separate movements of shoulders, chest, pelvis

  • Bounce: rhythmic bounces of the knees and pelvis

Once you master the basic steps, you can combine movements and create your own style.

5. Expression and attitude

Reggaeton is not just technique: it is attitude. It requires personality, confidence and a touch of provocation. Facial expression, gaze and body language are essential to convey emotion and presence.

6. Dancing alone, in a group or in pairs

You can dance reggaeton alone, working on your personal style, in a group with synchronized choreography or in pairs, with a more dynamic and sensual interaction. Each modality has its own charm!
